Hit Rates By Legislation Type

Figure 9 shows the total number of searches, finds and hit rates by Victoria Police in 2024 recorded as being under different types of legislation.

  • 61% are conducted under the Drugs Poisons and Controlled Substances Act.

  • 22.2% are recorded as being Firearms Protection Order searches.

  • 12.9% are s10 Control of Weapons Act searches NB these are not designated area searches. These searches require reasonable grounds.

  • 2.8% are Firearms Act searches.

  • 1.4% are Graffiti Act searches.

FPO Act searches do not require reasonable grounds for the search and have the lowest hit rate (8.4%) Firearms Act and Drugs Act searches also have low hit rates (15.2% and 16.6% respectively). Graffiti Act searches are the only searches in Victoria that have a greater than 50% hit rate.
